It was a landmark day and a big celebration for 500 supporters of Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach (formerly the Wellness Community).
For 30 years, CSCRB has provided free support programs for local cancer patients and their families. To mark the anniversary, supporters — from grateful survivors to members of the medical community — attended the 21st annual Celebrate Wellness food and beverage tasting at the South Coast Botanic Garden.
The enthusiastic support hardly stopped at the $150 ticket price. Guests also opted for intriguing live and silent auction items — and even stepped up with cash donations. When auctioneer Grant Snyder of Snyder Auctions offered up a chance to pledge cash, paddles flew up offering hundreds, even thousands.
In the end, the event netted nearly $170,000, which will help fund more than 200 free monthly support programs for cancer patients at CSCRB on the Redondo Beach pier.
“What an amazing way to celebrate our 30th year,” said CSCRB Executive Director Judith Opdahl. “A heartfelt thank you to all of our sponsors, donors and vendors — we could not continue to do what we do without their generosity.”
In honor of the 30th anniversary, CSCRB founders Dr. Thomas Simko, Elise Asch, therapist Anne Clary and Jean McMillan (who could not attend) were honored during the program.
